Upcycled Laptop Sleeve
Made With A Purpose makes lightweight laptop sleeves, totes, bags, and more, all upcycled from old Indian saris. Founder Reshma Thakkaran is an Indian American healthcare consultant who witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by Indian girls & women–from a lack of educational access to undesired early marriages to feeling stuck in a cycle that devalues women. Faced with how best to dispose of unwanted saris while helping her parents move, Reshma thought of a win-win idea: reduce waste by upcycling old saris into handbags and help provide empowerment by employing women in Vridavan, India. Made with a Purpose envisions “an environment where women feel financially safe and secure”. HER self-worth, independence and ability to provide education for her children helps to lift a community of women out of the poverty cycle. The sewing center supports 6 women.
Dawn's Early Light Cream Lipstick
Makeup America founder Randa Fahmy adored fashion and the Fourth of July growing up! As a child of immigrants, she pursued a career in law and politics and became disappointed with our growing national debt. Randa understands very well how “a growing national debt drives up interest rates, impacts student loans and small businesses, and threatens cuts to Veterans Benefits, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid — all programs where women are the majority beneficiaries.” She decided to combine her love of America, desire to empower women and love of fashion to create a line of long wearing nail polish and lipsticks that will help pay down the national debt. $1 from every product sold is put toward paying down the debt. Yummy Warm Beanie
Krochet Kids began with three high school friends who were all snow sport enthusiasts and would crochet super warm headwear for their mountain visits. Dubbed “the Krochet Kids” by a local newspaper, the three friends decided to teach this simple skill to women desperate for a job and personal empowerment. Krochet Kids have provided consistent work and living wages to help break the cycle of poverty in Uganda and Peru. A living wage means supporting oneself and having the opportunity to provide for one’s family. Consumers are introduced to each woman who made their product simple because each product is hand signed, with care, by the woman who made it. Krochet Kids works with their partner non-profit organization, CAPABLE, to also provide education, mentorship, and financial services to their employees. Visit website
Olive Wood Coffee Scoop
Badala expands employment programs to women and artisans across East Africa and Central America, and to domestic sex trafficking survivors. The Kuni Coffee Scoop is hand carved from locally sourced olive wood and hand painted by women in Badala’s Nairobi office. Founder Joelle McNamara found that without the opportunity for employment, women in Africa were usually faced with no other option except prostitution to support their families. She launched Badala to help the women she met who strongly desired the ability to better their lives. Visit website
Peanut-Free Nut Butters
Ground Up PDX’s healthy nut butters are delicious and if you can believe it, dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free, peanut-free, and sugar-free. This not-just-a-for-profit business was started by Julie Sullivan and Carolyn Cesario, and when the two realized what a huge impact a part-time job could have for women transitioning out of homelessness, they developed a 6-9 month mentorship program that helps provide job training and an opportunity to learn everything from sales and marketing to working in a commercial kitchen space. Each inspiring woman involved in the program is able to move forward to their next phase of life with job skills and confidence. Talk about life sustainability! Visit website
Sudara was founded by Shannon Keith in 2006 to empower women to live freely away from sex-slavery. Every pair of Punjammies®, robes and slouch pants are named in honor of a woman at one of the centers. Sudara employs women in their sewing factories and provides training programs to give safe, sustainable living-wage employment. Women who graduate from Sudara’s programs have moved on to become successful entrepreneurs in their own tailoring businesses, while others have received technology and cosmetology training to help them continue to move forward into great employment opportunities.
